During the flushing of the Village’s fire hydrants, it was noticed homeowners are planting bushes, placing decorations etc. on or near fire hydrants. This is impeding the fire hydrants accessibility. Minutes count during an emergency. In just two minutes, a fire can become life-threatening. In five minutes, a residence can be engulfed in flames. ANY obstruction to a fire hydrant can impede the operation of the hydrant.
Under the State of Illinois Fire Safety/Fire Hydrant Act, it states, no object shall be constructed, maintained or installed within 48 inches (4 feet) of a fire hydrant. It shall be unlawful to install, maintain, construct or enlarge any barriers, trees, bushes, walls, or other obstacles which may hide or impede the use of a fire hydrant.
